Developing Character in Your Workforce
Leadership
Tip of the Month by Ron Jasniowski
Most
employees have a variety of good character qualities. However everyone has room for
improvement. Some of our best performing employees are weak in at least one
important character trait. This doesn't need to be ongoing! Monthly character
discussion sessions are one of the best ways to help good employees get
better.
More and more
organizations/departments are including some discussion about the
character trait of the month in their monthly employee meetings. After a
few months of explaining action-oriented character definitions and
how to apply the trait, your department will almost
automatically improve. Most employees want to improve their performance
and become more productive, but many don’t know their limiting
factors. Monthly/weekly character trait discussions with your employees
are a mutually comfortable way to help them identify and overcome their
weaknesses.
How to structure
Character Discussion Sessions
1. Make it clear that this session is for
their personal well-being. State that character determines success. Everyone
wants to be successful and none of us has arrived. A few minutes each
month discussing the character trait of the month will help all of us
individually. Then collectively this will become a better workplace.
2. State the character trait of the month
and its action-oriented definition.
3.
Depict a famous person in history who
practiced the trait and the benefits it brought them.
4.
Lead employees in a discussion about how
they could practice the trait on the
job and at home.
Note: This
doesn't need to be a stand-alone meeting. These sessions
work well when incorporated with other meetings.
An excellent tool for
this is a sub_scription to monthly character bulle, tins. Character
bulle,tins
have talking points for each trait and makes it easy to discuss the trait
of the month. They cost $2.00 per issue for each employee (if you order
seven or more), otherwise individual sub_scriptions
sell for $39 per year. Posters also are available. I do not publish these
materials, but feel free to call me about how to acquire these materials
and more.
Future issues will provide you with
more details on how you can reach the next level of leadership
success.
You
may want to print this and discuss it at your next leadership team
meeting.
Sub,scribe
If you like this, you'll probably
enjoy a free sub, scription to the
"Leadership Tip of the Month." Go to
the
training page
and
click on the "Sub,scribe" paragraph.
You
can sub, scribe and unsub, scribe with ease.
