Organizing
Leadership Retreats
Leadership
Tip of the Month by Ron Jasniowski
While many organizations regularly hold
leadership retreats, many don't. Organizations that don't have
at least bi-annual leadership retreats, miss out on
numerous benefits.
Retreats are a great opportunity to:
-
Communicate the latest vision and energize
leaders to make the vision become reality
-
Communicate the organization's progress
-
Get help from outside speakers/trainers to
assist in areas of need
-
Identify obstacles and develop problem
solving skills to overcome obstacles
-
Air problems and concerns
-
Brain storm about how to reach
mutually-agreed-upon goals
-
Build cohesiveness, trust and endurance
-
Have fun together
-
Build interdependence and a team spirit
Presidents who don't hold leadership
retreats, often would like to have them, but they just don't have
the time to organize them. They subconsciously wish someone would
take initiative and organize it (under their direction of course).
Consider approaching the CEO or president of your
organization about holding a leadership retreat. This could be
your opportunity to make a meaningful difference in your
workplace. You might want to take one or more of your coworkers
with you.
In order to convince him/her to hold a
leadership retreat, you must demonstrate this is in their best
interest and that this will not be a burden on them. And propose a
reasonable budget for the event. The more extravagant, the less
likely it will take place. Retreats are easiest to hold at a local
hotel, resort or golf course club house.
Initiative is a character trait (and it is reported
that employers pay employees more for this trait than any
other trait). Now is is a good time to begin the planning process. With
a little preparation you can ensure this is a meaningful and
positive experience for all concerned. The encouragement and
morale boost leaders gain through this experience, more than
compensates for the time invested to make this a meaningful event!
Future issues will provide you with
more details on how you can reach the next level of leadership
success.
You
may want to print this and discuss it at your next leadership team
meeting.
