Developing Character ... and Untapped Potential
Leadership
Tip of the Month by Ron Jasniowski
We know good character is vital for the success of
individuals and organizations because character encompasses
integrity and much more. We also know managers with the right
leadership skills can develop the untapped potential in employees.
But can managers influence adult employees to improve their
character?
Because most managers think character is fixed and
you can't change a person's character, I begin my leadership
seminars by asking which traits they are looking for in job
applicants during the hiring process. They consistently call out
traits like: dependability, punctuality, good attitude,
flexibility, etc. Then I ask, "Can adults can improve in each of
these traits or are they fixed?" They respond, "Adults can
improve." I then say, "So these are learned behaviors and not
fixed traits, right?” They respond, “Yes.” Then I tell
them, “Managers with the right leadership skills can develop the
character and untapped potential of their employees!"
A good place to
begin helping employees
improve is by letting them
know what the character trait of the
month is and expressing your
appreciation to those who
practice the trait. There’s
more to build a culture of
character in your organization
(or department). Those details
would make this tip too long,
so we'll discuss that in
future issues.

qualities of American workers
